2 - 4 September 2019 | Cape Town, South Africa

Arrival Information

For Participants arriving by air, Cape Town International Airport has modern facilities which include currency exchange services, shops and restaurants, car rental services and shuttle links to city hotels. If you are arriving over the weekend (03/04 Sept), you may convert foreign currency to South African Rands at the airport (to allow you to use local taxis and shuttle buses), or at your hotel; banks would be closed until Monday morning. There are plenty of taxis and shuttle buses to transfer you from the airport to your hotel, and all the 3 recommended hotels (see the Conference website for these) are a mere 20-minute drive from the airport via the N2 freeway, if the traffic conditions are good. Panorama, the official tour agent for the Conference, are also able to arrange transfers from the airport to the hotels (refer to the Conference website for details).

The Garden Court Nelson Mandela Boulevard Hotel is on the final stretch of the N2 leading into the City Centre, and overlooks Table Bay and the Harbour. The Vineyard Hotel and the Southern Sun Newlands Hotel are away from the City Centre in the suburb of Newlands, and are best accessed by turning left from the N2 into either the M4 (Main Road) or the M3 (southbound). The location of these hotels in relation to the N2 freeway and other access routes may be seen via the link (interactive Google map):

The venue of the Welcome Reception on Sunday 04 Sept is the Leslie Social Sciences Building on the Upper Campus of the University of Cape Town. The Upper Campus of the University is situated on the lower slopes of Devil’s Peak, and is prominently visible (as a dense cluster of grey buildings with red roofs) as you approach the mountain from the airport via the N2 freeway. You will not miss this! The location of the University of Cape Town in relation to the recommended hotels may be seen in the above map, while the Leslie Social Sciences Building lies in Grid Location 3C on the University of Cape Town Upper Campus Map:

If you will arrive on the Upper Campus by car, parking will be available in the following Car Parks (please refer to the UCT Upper Campus Map): P5 (Grid Location 2E) and P17 (Grid Location 1C).

The Conference venue for all sessions (Monday 05 to Wednesday 07 Sept) is the River Club in Observatory. Coming from the airport along the N2 freeway, one must take Exit 8 and turn right under the bridge onto Liesbeek Parkway towards Salt River. At the next set of traffic lights, one must turn right into Observatory Road, then immediately left into the entrance to the River Club. See River Club Map with Directions. There is ample parking on the premises.

Coach transport will be provided throughout the duration of the Conference, to move delegates between the appointed hotels and the Conference Venue. These trips typically take 10 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. This service begins on Sun 04 Sept, when coaches depart from the hotels at 16h30 to take you to the Upper Campus of UCT for the Welcome Reception. You are requested to assemble in front of your hotel by 16h25. The Conference Registration Desk will open in the foyer of the Leslie Social Sciences Building at 16h00 on Sunday (for those who can make their own way to the UCT Upper Campus), and will remain open until 18h30 that evening. Coaches will pick up delegates for the return trip to the hotels promptly at 18h45. The coach timetable for the full period of the Conference is available in the document: Schedule of Transport

For the international visitors, it will be early spring at this time of the year in Cape Town. While generally warm and sunny during the day, the evenings are still chilly, so you are advised to take along some warm clothing. The Organisers wish all Participants from abroad a pleasant and enjoyable flight to South Africa and Cape Town, and extend a warm welcome to all delegates. We very much look forward to your participation at the SEMC 2016 International Conference.
